Rufus and Delilah Dog Walking is featuring Calaca (A0646220) as the Los Angeles dog adoption of the week. From the moment potential adopters look into his soulful eyes and feel his soft coat, they are likely to be hooked on this adorable, medium-size dog that looks like a mix of Labrador Retriever and Beagle (maybe a little German Shepherd, as per the shelter). At nearly 13 years of age, Calaca should not be spending his final years in a shelter.
Sadly, Calaca’s guardian became ill and has been hospitalized. Sadder still is that no arrangements were made for a family member or friend to look after Calaca and his two doggy siblings, who have been adopted/rescued, in an emergency. Looking at them, you can see that they were loved and cared for but, through no fault of their own, they ended up at the East Valley Animal Shelter.
Yet, what is obvious about Calaca is his zest for life. He gets so excited when he sees a volunteer unlocking his kennel door to take him for a walk; he still has pep in his step; he is food-motivated and will sit for a treat. He participates in playgroups at the shelter and he appears to get along with the other dogs. In fact, he lived in a home with two other dogs.
Alas, Calaca, awaits being discovered by someone who will overlook his age and see him for the loving and loyal companion he is meant to be, for however many years he has left. There are myriad of reasons to adopt an older dog and are explained well in these articles, Senior Animal Adoptions by MattieDog and Giving Thanks: Happy Ruby Day by The Daily Pip. One to consider is the second chance at life you are giving.
To meet Calaca in person, the East Valley Animal Shelter is located at 14409 Vanowen Street, Van Nuys, 91405. The phone number is 888-4LAPET1 or 888-452-7381. Ask for Calaca by name or by his shelter number A0646220. The East Valley Animal Shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, and they are closed on Mondays and Holidays.
